Government to Light Up 42 Remote Communities in Agusan del Sur
Toward inclusive development, the national government is set to energize 42 remote communities in Agusan del Sur through the 2025 Sitio Electrification Program (SEP), benefiting over 1,200 Agsurnon households.
The Agusan del Sur Electric Cooperative, Inc. (ASELCO) will lead the initiative, delivering reliable electricity to sitios and puroks across 11 municipalities. This milestone underscores ASELCO’s ongoing commitment to uplifting underserved communities through accessible and sustainable power.
A coordination meeting was recently held at the ASELCO Main Office in Ugpaanan Tu Kadumahan, bringing together key stakeholders—including representatives from local government units (LGUs), barangay and sitio leaders, and officials from the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH). The gathering emphasized the urgency of electrifying isolated areas and laid the groundwork for swift implementation.
General Manager Engr. Emmanuel B. Galarse underscored the value of cross-sector collaboration. “We deeply appreciate your dedication to this initiative, which will significantly improve the lives of Agsurnons, especially those in far-flung communities,” he stated.
Backed by the General Appropriations Act (GAA), the SEP has secured a budget of P109.7 million for the construction of distribution lines, covering both materials and labor. An additional P10.5 million will support house wiring for participating households. Construction is slated to begin in July 2025 and is expected to wrap up by year-end.
To ensure smooth implementation and avoid challenges encountered in previous SEP projects, Mr. Aljhun C. Lasquite, Head of the Special Projects and Development Section, and Engr. Emelio R. Bahalla Jr., Head of the Planning Section, outlined operational guidelines for contractors and beneficiaries. Stakeholders were urged to uphold diligence, transparency, and accountability—key elements flagged in a prior audit by the National Electrification Administration (NEA).
The meeting also served as a platform for an oath-taking ceremony for newly re-elected members of ASELCO’s Board of Directors, officiated by Vice Mayor Ramil “Jing” Pulvera of San Francisco. Vice Mayor Pulvera emphasized the transformative impact of the SEP, describing it as a “catalyst for sustainable development.” He encouraged inclusive collaboration, remarking, “Every switch flipped on represents a new beginning—an opportunity for education and growth.”
Director Julius F. Rivera detailed the program’s mechanics and reiterated its importance amid evolving political dynamics. He expressed gratitude for the provincial government’s support and called on local leaders to closely monitor project implementation.
The meeting also tackled logistical hurdles such as right-of-way concerns and pole installation on private property. Attendees committed to addressing these issues proactively to ensure seamless execution.
Closing the event, Director Elvira Lamanilao encouraged everyone to treat ASELCO personnel and contractors as vital partners, reinforcing the cooperative spirit essential to the SEP’s success.
With the electrification program now in motion, communities across Agusan del Sur are poised for transformation. Beyond lighting homes, this initiative empowers lives—fueling economic growth, educational access, and the national goal of total electrification.
